What is R-22 Refrigerant?

R-22 still matters because many homeowners are still using older air conditioning systems built around it. Even though it is no longer the standard, it has not disappeared from existing equipment.

What the R-22 Phase-Out Means for Your System

This is the part many homeowners want explained clearly.

In the United States, production and import of HCFC-22, commonly called R-22, ended on January 1, 2020. That does not mean your current R-22 air conditioner became illegal overnight, and it does not mean you are required to replace it immediately just because it still uses R-22. 

Existing systems can still be used and serviced. However, service work now relies on recovered, recycled, or reclaimed refrigerant instead of newly produced supply.

What that means for you:

  • refrigerant-related repairs can become more expensive
  • availability is more limited than it used to be
  • leaks should be taken seriously
  • older systems may become harder or less practical to keep repairing over time

The main takeaway is simple: if your system still uses R-22, you do not need to panic, but you do need to be proactive.

Signs Your R-22 System May Need Attention

If your AC uses R-22 and something feels off, refrigerant may be part of the issue. Some common warning signs include:

Should You Repair or Replace an R-22 System?

That depends on the age of your system, its overall condition, and the type of repair it needs.

Repair may still make sense if:

  • the system is otherwise in decent shape
  • the issue is limited and not part of a larger pattern
  • the repair cost is still reasonable for the age of the unit

Replacement may make more sense if:

  • the system is older and breaking down more often
  • there is a refrigerant leak and the repair cost is high
  • efficiency has dropped and cooling performance is unreliable
  • you are spending repeated money on an aging unit

If your system still uses R-22, the real question is not just whether it can be fixed. The better question is whether fixing it is the smartest long-term choice for your comfort, budget, and peace of mind.
